Hi Diana, I'm not sure if Ms. Philips checks this interview too often, so I'll forward your remarks to her. It'll give me a chance to congratulate her for being a finalist for the NBCC Award :) .

This is not your typical comment! My dad, (84 years old) graduated from Upshire County High School in 1944. He was one of 15 Aylestock children raised in Buckhannon WV. He told me about your book "Lark and Termite" and is quite sure some of his younger siblings knew you and your family! I am his daughter Diana and promised him I would try to write you an email. He also has a museum of Buckhannon history in the one room school house his father and grandfather tought school in, in Sago. It is amazing and will warm your heart if you were to see it. You may even know each other or your families.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you would like to talk to my dad he would be more than happy to give you alot of history on Buckhannon WV
Thank you.

A very informative interview and, for me, especially well-timed. We are heading up to Lake Louise for a mini-Rockies vacation and I've been wondering what book(s) to take, because I wanted something at least a bit historical. William Maxwell is perfect (thank you, Ms. Phillips) -- the Library of America volumes of his work have been tucked away in a bookshelf corner and never seem to attract attention. The volume with They Came Like Swallows has now been pulled out and readied for packing.

What a fantastic interview, Trevor. It was well worth the wait. I was a big fan of Lark and Termite, as you know, and this interview provides some really fascinating background. That picture she mentions makes up the front cover of the UK edition, I hadn't realised it was so instrumental in the writing of the book itself. I'm also pleased to have finally read an author's recommendation (2 of them!) so that I don't have to add too much more to my TBR pile.

I thought this interview was wonderful! I particularly liked how she described the alternate world of the novel and how it must be strong enough to withstand distractions. Maybe because I'm a busy mom so my writing career exists only within my head right now, but this interview really encouraged me.
