It’ll probably be a while before I read it too, Kevin. It’s pretty long! Maybe I’ll build some time for it at the beginning of next year. I am definitely looking forward to that delayed end-stop though (if it exists . . .).

Having read both volumes 1 and 2, I appreciate the difficulty of attempting a review (I’m rather glad that my reading was done before I started blogging). Marias has a way of creating an atmosphere and sketching the elements of his story that almost defies description, let alone comment — I think the quotes you chose illustrate that well. I do have volume three on hand but it will be some time before I get to it.

Interesting, Isabel. I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed that same thing in Portuguese, but perhaps I never paid much attention. I will listen more closely from now on! The long but fluid sentences do seem to come off nicely from Spanish writers, though.

Spoken Spanish can be like a big run-on sentence.

People change topics in the middle of a breath and sometimes I lose the thread.
