I wonder if you'll find something detached in Goldengrove, Sasha. I think it was in The New York Times that the reviewer wished Prose would have helped us to care about the characters. I didn't see it, honestly. I thought the characters were well developed and any distance helped me see them unsentimentally. That said, I was looking at other elements almost from page one of the novel, and I think Prose was interested in other aspects too. Please let us know what you think!

Hello. :) I've seen this book at the library, but after carting it around with me, I replaced it--the only fiction of Prose's I ever liked was Blue Angel, the rest were not as fascinating as her nonfiction. And, yes, Blue Angel is very much recommended.

But, thanks for your review. I might just take another look at Goldengrove the next time I visit the library. (But, I whine, she can be so, I don't know, so cold sometimes, too detached.)

That is excellent news! I will be casting my vote for Will. We watched some clips on how War Horse was being made, and it looks fantastic!

As for Prose, I wouldn't jump to read her yet, Kevin. I'm going to read Blue Angel next. It was a National Book Award finalist, and I've heard it is excellent. Maybe then . . .

Sorry to abuse this post, but War Horse -- the National Theatre production which includes our fellow blogger Will in the cast -- is the only non-musical on the short list for this year's Olivier Audience award. I know Mrs. B liked the book and I have already voted -- you can cast your vote here http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/olivier_awards/vote/

As for Prose, I'll admit this review tilted me towards reading her, but only tilted. Maybe, maybe. I know D.G. Meyers thinks she is great but I can't figure out why.
