Here are those winners (I&#8217;d link to their website for a list of all winners, but their website has always been atrocious and hard to access &#8212; it&#8217;s no different this morning).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>John Newbery Medal Winner<\/strong><\/span> (for most outstanding contribution to children&#8217;s literature):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Flora &amp; Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures<\/em><\/strong>, by Kate DiCamillo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Newbery Honor Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Doll Bones<\/em><\/strong>, by Holly Black<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Year of Billy Miller<\/em><\/strong>, by Kevin Henkes<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>One Came Home<\/em><\/strong>, by Amy Timberlake<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Paperboy<\/em><\/strong>, by Vince Vawter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is Kate DiCamillo&#8217;s second Nebery Medal. She won ten years ago for <em>The Tale of Desperaux<\/em>, which I liked. I&#8217;m afraid I have not read any of this year&#8217;s Newbery books, though\u00a0my wife and I have had our eyes on <em>Flora &amp; Ulysses<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Randolph Caldecott Medal Winner<\/span><\/strong> (for the most distinguished American picture book for children):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Locomotive<\/em><\/strong>, written and\u00a0illustrated by Brian Floca<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Caldecott Honor Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Journey<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Aaron Becker<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Flora and the Flamingo<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Molly Idle<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Mr. Wuffles!<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by David Wiesner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this group, I bought my wife <em>Journey<\/em>, which, in a way, is an elaborate, beautiful reimagining of <em>Harold and the Purple Crayon<\/em>. I loved it. We are also big fans of <em>Flora and the Flamingo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Michael L. Printz Award Winner<\/span> <\/strong>(for excellence in literature written for young adults):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Midwinterblood<\/em><\/strong>, by Marcus Sedgwick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Printz Honor Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Eleanor &amp; Park<\/em><\/strong>, by Rainbow Rowell<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Kingdom of Little Wounds<\/em><\/strong>, by Susann Cokal<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Maggot Moon<\/em><\/strong>, written by Sally Gardner; illustrated by Julian Crouch<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Navigating Early<\/em><\/strong>, by Clare Vanderpool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m afraid I know nothing about any of these books, though I think <em>Midwinterblood<\/em> has an intriguing title. I&#8217;m curious.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award Winner<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(recognizing an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>P.S. Be Eleven<\/strong><\/em>, by Rita Williams-Garcia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>King Honor Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>March: Book One<\/em><\/strong>, written\u00a0by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin; illustrated by Nate Powell<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Darius &amp; Twig<\/em><\/strong>, by Walter Dean Myers<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Words with Wings<\/em><\/strong>, by Nikki Grimes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While I have not looked into any of these specific books, these are authors I&#8217;ve heard quite a bit about. In 2011, Rita Williams-Garcia was a Newbery Honor winner for her book <em>One Crazy Summer<\/em>, and Walter Dean Myers has been a Newbery Honor recipient twice, once in 1989 for <em>Scorpions<\/em>, and again in 1993 for <em>Somewhere in the Darkness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Winner<\/strong> <\/span>(for the most distinguished book for beginning readers):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The Watermelon Seed<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Geisel Honor Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Ball<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Mary Sullivan<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>A Big Guy Took My Ball<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Mo Willems<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Penny and Her Marble<\/em><\/strong>, written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We always make sure to pick up the new Elephant and Piggie book, so we&#8217;ve read (many times) <em>A Big Guy Took My Ball<\/em>. I&#8217;m not familiar with the others, though I think it&#8217;s fair to say today is a good day for Kevin Henkes, getting both this and the Newbery Honor.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these awards.
