\"EV-14-Feature\"David and I are back with another episode of The Eclipse Viewer, the podcast dedicated to the Criterion Collection\u2019s Eclipse Series of DVDs.<\/p>\n

In this episode, we finish our talk about Eclipse Series 1: Early Bergman by talking about the last two\u00a0films included in\u00a0the five-film set.<\/p>\n

The first film we talk about,\u00a0Thirst <\/em>(1949), starts to feel like the Bergman movies he’ll become famous for. A young couple travels in a suffocating train across war-torn Europe, thinking back on their failed relationships and wondering if this relationship is also going to fail. It’s moody and psychologically tormented.<\/p>\n

To Joy <\/em>(1949) is the\u00a0last feature in the set. Though the film begins with the tragic death of one of its central characters, the film is rather upbeat for a Bergman movie.\u00a0We step back and see the development of a relatively happy marriage (relative to other Bergman films), even as it nearly destroys the two individuals. While the relationship itself remains in the focal point, the film also explores questions of art: how does one express the despair and joy of a real relationship in art?<\/p>\n
