Get it?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;Got it,&#8221; I say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I know that he is strange and not as smart as he pretends, but at least he keeps the borders of his mind realm well patrolled.\u00a0That must count for something.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Dungeon Master and his little brother Marco are raised by their strange father, Dr. Varelli\u00a0(&#8220;Play nice, my beautiful puppies.&#8221; and &#8220;I honor your wish, my beauty.&#8221;).\u00a0Their mother left, somehow, years earlier.\u00a0Our narrator comes from what appears to be a more stable family &#8212; at least, his parents worry about him, his playing Dungeons and Dragons, and his contact with the Varelli family.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;Is it fun?&#8221; my mother asks.\u00a0&#8220;I want you to have fun, you know.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;Yeah, it&#8217;s fun, I guess.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">My mother gives my father one of those meaningful looks which means nothing to me yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;What?&#8221; I say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;The Varelli kid,&#8221; my sister says.\u00a0&#8220;Isn&#8217;t he the one who flashed those girls at the ice rink. And set his turds on fire in the school parking lot?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;That was a long time ago,&#8221; I say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;It was kind of cool,&#8221; my sister says.\u00a0&#8220;In a sicko way.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;Poor Varelli,&#8221; my father says.\u00a0&#8220;His wife.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;That&#8217;s the think about it,&#8221; my mother says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">&#8220;The thing about what?&#8221; I say.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The story is a nice look at adolescence, with the vagaries and the chance and the attempts to understand how one fits in, though there is more darkness here than that suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps as the story sits in my head and if more people comment, I can move this one up a few notches from just-above-indifferent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s New Yorker fiction is Sam Lipsyte&#8217;s &#8220;The Dungeon Master.&#8221;
