What I appreciated was the fact that Cao Naigian wrote it while holding other jobs &#8212; he wasn&#8217;t really a writer. I&#8217;m going to refresh my memory of it and see if it was just me at that time of my life.\u00a0I also have copies of <em>The Twin<\/em> and <em>The Discoverer<\/em> that I frequently think I should read begin (though <em>The Discoverer <\/em>is the third book in\u00a0the Wergeland\u00a0trilogy, so I probably won&#8217;t get to it for a while &#8212; I\u00a0have the second book, <em>The Conqueror<\/em>, but not the first, <em>The Seducer<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Of the ones I&#8217;ve already read and reviewed, I am not surprised they are on this list.\u00a0<em>Ghosts<\/em>, <em>The Tanners<\/em>, and <em>Desert<\/em> were all supreme books and supremely translated.\u00a0I also thoroughly enjoyed &#8212; just not as much &#8212; <em>The Skating Rink<\/em> and <em>Death in Spring<\/em>.\u00a0There are three books I&#8217;m surprised didn&#8217;t make the cut: Guillermo Rosales&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The Halfway House\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2009\/05\/17\/guillermo-rosaless-the-halfway-house\/\" target=\"_self\">The Halfway House<\/a><\/em>, Horacio Castellanos Moya&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The She-Devil in the Mirror\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2009\/10\/04\/horacio-castellanos-moya-the-she-devil-in-the-mirror\/\" target=\"_self\">The She-Devil in the Mirror<\/a><\/em>, and Michal Ajvaz&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The Other City\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2009\/06\/30\/michal-ajvazs-the-other-city\/\" target=\"_self\">The Other City<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 But New Directions and Dalkey are both well represented in the list.\u00a0Plus, that makes the list more interesting to me because it leaves more I haven&#8217;t read.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read and reviewed any of the books above, please leave a link in the comments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s Best Translated Book Award longlist has been announced!
