{"id":4527,"date":"2010-10-05T11:27:02","date_gmt":"2010-10-05T15:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/?p=4527"},"modified":"2016-06-20T17:50:06","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T21:50:06","slug":"2010-giller-prize-shortlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/10\/05\/2010-giller-prize-shortlist\/","title":{"rendered":"2010 Giller Prize Shortlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The winner will be announced on November 9.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>David Bergen: <strong><em>The Matter with Morris<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Alexander MacLeod: <strong><em>Light Lifting<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sarah Selecky: <strong><em>This Cake Is for the Party<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Johanna Skibsrud: <strong><em>The Sentimentalist<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Kathleen Winter: <strong><em>Annabel<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only David Bergen has\u00a0been here before, and he took the prize in 2005 for <em>The Time in Between<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I read four of the longlisters: Tom Rachman&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The Imperfectionists\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/07\/30\/tom-rachman-the-imperfectionists\/\" target=\"_self\">The Imperfectionists<\/a><\/em>, Cordelia Strube&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of Lemon\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/09\/24\/cordelia-strube-lemon\/\" target=\"_self\">Lemon<\/a><\/em>, Douglas Coupland&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of Player One\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/09\/28\/douglas-coupland-player-one\/\" target=\"_self\">Player One<\/a><\/em>, and Avner Mandelman&#8217;s <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The Debba\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/10\/04\/avner-mandelman-the-debba\/\" target=\"_self\">The Debba<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0As you can see, not one made the shortlist.\u00a0 I would have liked to see both\u00a0<em>Lemon<\/em> and <em>The Imperfectionists<\/em> on the list.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0their exclusion means\u00a0I have five books to look forward to reading over the next month.\u00a0I am thrilled that Alexander MacLeod&#8217;s collection of short stories and Kathleen Winter&#8217;s <em>Annabel<\/em> are on the list, as they were two that I really wanted to read. I&#8217;m a bit sad that Jane Urquhart&#8217;s <em>Sanctuary Line<\/em> didn&#8217;t make it.
