I assure you that Egan pulls it off. The ambition, the variety\u00a0&#8212; they never cloud over the intimate settings she\u2019s created where we can spend quiet moments with these compelling individuals.&#8221; I&#8217;m still not sure why this novel composed of interconnected short stories &#8212; each in its own unique style &#8212; didn&#8217;t show up\u00a0as a finalist for\u00a0the National Book Award. Surely it will show up in the awards early next year. After this, I went back to read Egan&#8217;s lesser <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of The Keep\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/09\/13\/jennifer-egan-the-keep\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Keep<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0It was okay but didn&#8217;t do it for me. Throw in some genuinely intriguing art history (as opposed to that falsely intriguing stuff making bestsellers), and it\u2019s already a winner for me. I was completely entranced. The language and the cadence of the story, at first delicate and then raucous, made it impossible to read quickly. The best thing about this book is <em>not<\/em> the cover.&#8221; That last sentence is saying quite a bit, since this is one of my favorite covers of the year.\u00a0This is such a creepy book, I couldn&#8217;t resist acquiring several of Moore&#8217;s back catalog. The writing is top-notch.&#8221; Ozick had a new book &#8212; <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of Foreign Bodies\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/11\/15\/cynthia-ozick-foreign-bodies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Foreign Bodies<\/a><\/em> &#8212;\u00a0out this year, and it, too, is exceptional. Next up is Wharton&#8217;s <em>The Custom of the Country<\/em>, which I&#8217;ve heard so much about and which recently made <a title=\"KFC's 2010 Top 10 List\" href=\"http:\/\/kevinfromcanada.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/04\/2010-kfcs-10-best\/\" target=\"_blank\">KFC&#8217;s best of the year list<\/a> (also, K2D2 has written about it on <a title=\"Kevin from California's Post\" href=\"http:\/\/interpolations.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/10\/the-custom-of-the-country-by-edith-wharton\/\" target=\"_blank\">his blog<\/a>, and I know he&#8217;s a major fan).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Now for my two top books of the year.\u00a0They are not only my favorites of the year but also two favorites of my lifetime.\u00a0They are exceptional from any angle.\u00a0Unfortunately, one of the authors is dead and wrote only a few novels. This is Meloy&#8217;s second collection of short stories; her first, <em><a title=\"Mookse Review of Half in Love\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/08\/13\/maile-meloy-half-in-love\/\" target=\"_blank\">Half in Love<\/a><\/em>, is just as good.\u00a0I have her two novels, <em>Liars and Saints<\/em> and <em>A Family Daughter<\/em>, in line.\u00a0In fall 2011 her first young adult novel, <em>The Apothecary<\/em>, will come out.\u00a0It sounds strange: a cold war novel featuring kids and magic. Plus, <a title=\"Mookse Review of Bright Center of Heaven\" href=\"http:\/\/mookseandgripes.com\/reviews\/2010\/10\/27\/william-maxwell-bright-center-of-heaven\/\" target=\"_blank\">I learned earlier this year<\/a> that, while the author may be right that a certain book is not a masterpiece, it doesn&#8217;t meant it is not worth reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My favorites from 2010!
