Weekend Thoughts

June 6, 2020

Here are some early June weekend thoughts.

Paul Dano: Wildlife

June 5, 2020

Paul Dano’s large-hearted debut film, Wildlife, is an exceptional adaptation of Richard Ford’s 1990 novel of the same name. The Criterion Collection recently released this on home video, and I highly recommend it.

Graciliano Ramos: São Bernardo

June 3, 2020

NYRB Classics recently published a new translation of Graciliano Ramos’s second novel, São Bernardo, a captivating look at an insecure man trying to hold onto his power.

Emma Cline: “White Noise”

June 1, 2020

In their 2020 Summer Fiction issue, The New Yorker has published Emma Cline’s “White Noise.”

Haruki Murakami: “Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey”

June 1, 2020

As part of their 2020 Summer Fiction issue, The New Yorker has published Haruki Murakami’s “Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey,” translated from the Japanese by Philip Gabriel. This is a sequel to his 2006 story “A Shinagawa Monkey.”
