I missed this when it was announced a few weeks ago. This years winner of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award is:
- Tea at the Midland, by David Constantine
I know little about this collection, but please feel free to let us know if you liked it.
I read it a few months ago and have now largely forgotten it. I can recall a couple of stories but it was a book I admired for its craft rather than one I loved reading. A deserving winner? Maybe, but there were several on the longlist I much preferred.
I sometimes suspect (from reading reviews of short story collections on Amazon and Goodreads) that contrary to the oft-touted opinion that short stories are enjoying a renaissance amongst today’s time-pressed readers, that most of the people who are reading short stories are actually themselves short story writers, and Constantine does seem to me to be very much a writer’s writer.
