  1. Nov 6 is particularly stark: three grim stories from the NYTimes, then a terse paragraph on Cresspahl visiting his dead mother back in the 30s – the usual abrupt juxtaposition. The Nov 7 section is much lighter, almost conventional in style: it has Gesine and Marie visit D.E(richson) and his mother outside NYC. I find the strand of the novel with him and his delicate romance with GC one of the most satisfying in the novel, and perhaps the most near to a conventional narrative thread. You have to wait until almost the last few pages to find out how it works out…No spoilers.

  2. Also on November 6, the wry observation regarding the other front page article: the president and his family go to church. I appreciate the author’s style immensely.

  3. Rather intriguing comment on November 9th (yes, I am a few hours early). Entry is all about nuisance phone calls and ends with Gesine and Marie going ex-directory because:

“Then D. E. found us while idly flipping through the Manhattan phone book, and we had ourselves removed and are happy to pay the cost of doing so.”

All not well with relationship with D.E.?

  4. I just read a short interview with Max Porter. In answer to The Book I’m most ashamed not to have read, he said:

“I am ashamed that I can only read books in English. I hope to rectify that, but in the meantime I worship translators.”

I wanted to quote it hear and say to Damian how impressed I am with this mammoth feat of translation and express my appreciation. I do think about the translation while reading this book and I hope you are still following along with our comments.

  5. I am still following along, and thanks for the nice words. Thank you for continuing to read and comment and keeping the read a long afloat!
