Dec. 31 entry: Gesine’s would-be lover, D.E. is named in full, I think for the first time, as Dieter Erichson, Professor of Physics & Chemistry, ‘adviser to the US Air Force on matters of radar technology’. Marie considers him a special friend – not just her mother’s, but hers: she’s the one who gave him the name D.E. – ‘she shows her affection not with his first name but with the other name, the one everyone uses.’ He tells her, when she asks playfully how his business is, ‘about the US Air Force’s Greenland radar installations’; she hangs on his every word ‘like a bloodhound.’ I love this bond between the precocious Marie and the mysterious, imperious D.E. And that reference to Greenland, which D.T. recently (allegedly) wanted to buy…Presidents and their ways, again (see Dec. 21-22)…
It was good to learn more about D.E. on that day’s entry.
