"The Third-Born" by Mohsin Hamid Originally published in the September 24, 2012 issue of The New Yorker.
I read Mohsin Hamid’s Booker shortlisted The Reluctant Fundamentalist when it was published in 2008, but I haven’t thought much of the author since, so I’m looking forward to this one. Leave any comments you may have in below.
Nice one! I had read his Reluctant Fundamentalist and was less than impressed. So it was good to read sometho I lkied from Hamid’s pen.
I haven’t gotten my New Yorker copy yet so I can’t read the fine print on the cover, but already I don’t like the clowns. What’s happening in our country is just too serious to encourage people’s natural despair that all actors on the public scene are clownish.
Some clowns are worse than others. Much worse.
Such a shame this story stirred up so little conversation; I know I have about three months worth of stories to still catch up on, but among their more recent stuff, this is the best thing I’ve read in TNY in quite a while, and not just because of the empathetic twinge one has to such conditions (or such powerful tolerance for them). You’re really making me feel guilty, Aaron! I’m glad you’re back in the saddle and am looking forward to the holidays to catch up a bit on these I’ve missed.
