A very good shortlist overall. Sally Rooney’s omission is a surprise but plenty to get behind.

I really hope The Mars Room wins – that was my favourite on the longlist and I was thrilled to see it make the cut. Bit of a pre-emptive gripe over on the Goodreads message board about the prospect of another US male winning the award to make it three-in-a-row but surely nobody would quibble at Kushner…
