This year’s Man Booker International Prize shortlist was announced earlier today. The six books rose to the top of the original longlist of thirteen. From The Mookse and the Gripes Goodreads group I gather that some of these are favorites where others are controversial, as is only natural. I think most there would substitute out The Pine Islands (which was in last place in the rankings there) for The Faculty of Dreams (which was in first). But that notwithstanding, here is the official list:

Celestial Bodies
by Jokha Alharthi
translated from the Arabic by Marilyn Booth
purchase from Amazon

The Years
by Annie Ernaux
translated from the French by Alison L. Strayer
purchase from Amazon

The Pine Islands
by Marion Poschmann
translated from the German by Jen Calleja
purchase from Amazon

Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead
by Olga Tokarczuk
translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones
purchase from Amazon

The Shape of the Ruins
by Juan Gabriel Vásquez
translated from the Spanish by Anne McLean
purchase from Amazon

The Remainder
by Alia Trabucco Zerán
translated from the Spanish by Sophie Hughes
purchase from Amazon

Some of these books are not out in the United States yet, but they are on their way. Links above are to the U.S. edition, so if you’re interested in reading right away click carefully!

Paul has reviewed a couple of these on the site (and read and reviewed all of them on Goodreads).
