The 2020 Booker Prize Shortlist

The Booker Prize shortlist has been announced! First things first: Hilary Mantel will not be the first to win the Booker Prize three times, and The Mirror and the Light will not win Mantel the prize for each of her books in the Wolf Hall Trilogy. The judges have not shortlisted it.

But perhaps that’s the wrong way to look at this. Like the longlist this list is surprising and continues to champion the debut: four of these six novels are debuts. The authors also make up a diverse group (other than that five of the six are from or now live in the United States), and that’s so nice to see.

I myself am going to cheer for Shuggie Bain, at least for now, as it’s the only one I have read. I thought it was brilliant, though, so I feel good cheering for it anyway.
